Tanner Bosma (b. 1997) is a painter originally from Holland, Michigan, now based in Brooklyn, New York. He holds a BFA in Art Education with an emphasis in painting from Western Michigan University. Bosma’s work seeks a beautiful tension between solitude and urban life — a place where time slows, light lingers, and the city pulses with a quiet energy. He is drawn to cinematic, dark, and moody scenes: rain-slicked streets, reflective surfaces, and the luminous glow of a city after dark. His process is kinetic and intuitive: beginning with loose, gestural color washes across multiple canvases simultaneously, he layers mark upon mark, pushing through what he calls the “inevitable ugly phase” before arriving at a final, highly intentional linework that may go through fifty or more iterations before it’s right. His dedication and love of art was fostered early — by a grandmother who painted and gave him his first art kit — and that sense of art as connection has remained central to his practice.
